Pompano Beach Fishing Village is a reality.
Construction is under way of the pier and restaurants to be built in Pompano Beach.
The existing pier is in the process of being demolished. The pier has been in Pompano Beach for the last 55 years, and has been an enjoyable fishing destination, as well as a pleasant place for locals and tourists to visit any time of the year.
The pier being constructed is going to be equipped with wireless internet. It will have shaded benches and pictures of marine life on pier pylons that match the new parking garage which is located across the street, according to city plans.
The pier replacement will be the last major addition to the city’s beach improvement effort, which is transforming the entire area, much to the delight of the real estate market. This transformation began in 2012 and cost about $50 million in publicly funded projects.
Seeking to become more of a destination place for both tourists and locals , Pompano transformed Atlantic Boulevard with underground utility poles and wider sidewalks, added a splash park and new beach landscaping, and built a 600-space garage lined with sails and LED lighting, along with a new street.
Still to be done: 48,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space to make a “fishing village” near the pier. One of the restaurants is under construction.
The pier’s cost of $12.3 million aroused complaints at city meetings that another pier builder had offered a price that was millions less. But even those who had been critical, voted to go ahead with appropriating the money for the construction project..
There have been some delays. Last year, city officials estimated that pier demolition would be sometime around the Fourth of July last year, but getting permission from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to proceed took a year longer than expected. If you drive down the beach just North of Atlantic Blvd in Pompano Beach, the cranes are now very noticeable.
